4 Wedding Flower Trends You’ll Be Seeing All Summer

Summer weddings are a perennial favorite, with many couples favoring long days and warm nights for enjoying their wedding day. A July or August brunch or sunset wedding is a great way to get guests out of the summer sun as the weather warms up. But one of the main benefits of planning a summer wedding is the number of floral options you have, as many of the most popular wedding flowers like lilies, carnations and gardenias bloom beautifully in the warm summer months. No matter how many weddings you go to this summer, you are sure to see plenty of flower arrangements and other creative uses of floral pieces. Here are some of the biggest flower trends for this summer wedding season.

Large Displays and Grand Entrances

Another popular trend this summer is large statement pieces, whether a grand entrance making for a magical walk down the aisle or even a dramatic, custom-built backdrop to perfectly frame your “I do.” Especially combined with more natural and pared-down floral flourishes, these statement pieces are great attention-grabbers, and help make for memorable pictures and give texture and a backdrop to the space. Large Instagram-worthy backdrops that allow for the wedding party and others to take photos also won’t be going away any time soon. While churches or chapels aren’t as popular wedding locales as they once were, an old church door with lots of floral arrangements surrounding it makes for a statement entry, and a great place for photos. Lavish endcap and head table floral pieces are also trending, with more of an emphasis on beautiful and dramatic pieces close to the entrance that leave a lasting first impression as guests enter the venue.

Unique Textures

Unique and varied textures will be big this year in floral arrangements, with many designs going for a playful and varied aesthetic that might include playing with contrasts like fresh and dried flowers mixed in a bouquet. A lot of couples are exploring different types of floral designs that are a break from the more traditional style of arrangements that are very rose-heavy and uniform. You’ll see unique pairings and unexpected combinations and a lot of room to flex creativity. As mentioned above, dried flowers are essential, as well as mixing strong and soft colors and textures to really create a unique aesthetic.

Bright and Bold Maximalism

This year, with the pandemic still having interrupted a lot of plans and weddings, we’ll be looking to see couples who are going all in for statement pieces, dramatic installations and really anything that ups the wow factor. Think splashes of color and bold and dramatic centerpieces. Hanging flower installations but particularly flower clouds will still be on trend and play with space while lending a very dramatic appeal. Both are eye-catching and make great focal points, with hanging flowers making interesting hanging centerpieces and flower clouds ethereally floating over guests’ heads. With the complications of supply-chain issues, postponements and other challenges the pandemic has caused the wedding industry, many couples will want to make sure that when their special day finally happens, they make it as big and memorable as they can.

…But Also Understated and Timeless

On the opposite end of the spectrum, simple and timeless floral designs will also be a huge trend this year. In the same way that the pandemic may make many couples want to go all out for their big day after time spent indoors and not around people, this year we’ll still see a lot of smaller and simpler flower designs – less the grand statement pieces mentioned earlier and more of a focus on simplicity and classic sleek lines. Some elements of this include neutral colors, more natural boho-style arrangements and opting for more subtle and timeless bouquet options like white peonies and Lily of the Valley. The pandemic has also made many couples realize that they don’t care as much for a wide variety of expensive and trendy pieces — they want a few designs they really love with a focus more on their soon-to-be spouse and less about ostentation.
